Before and After
  • Smith Street Barn Restoration in Norwalk, Connecticut
    Before
Smith Street Barn Restoration in Norwalk, Connecticut
    After

After Hurricane Sandy, this barn on Smith Street in Norwalk, CT was in terrible condition. It was completely unusable and near falling apart. After time and effort were put in, though, it was a great success.

We used Benjamin Moore stain to give the barn a classic style in traditional barn red. The structure itself needed serious repair to ensure that it would stand. We also used GAF Timberline shingles to repair and replace the damaged roof, ensuring leak-free protection for years to come.

The Norwalk Historical Society was thrilled with the finished project, and we were happy to provide! The skilled experts at Scholar Painting can handle historic restoration projects of any shape and size, always showing these structures the care and attention they deserve.

What To Consider When Painting Your Exterior

The decisions you make when painting your home's exterior will have long-lasting results. Choose poorly, and your paint job may begin to lose its luster in just five years. Choose wisely, and it could last for 15 years or more.

Before you paint your house, consider these questions:

It costs you nothing to meet with one of our specialists for an on-site inspection, professional consultation, and written cost estimate. To schedule your free exterior house painting quote, contact us by phone or e-mail today!

What Makes Great Exterior Paint?

An ideal paint job should last for more than ten years, should resist damage and fading, and should be suited for the unique needs of your home.

As environmental standards for paint production become stricter, the industry is rapidly evolving! The best way to determine which paints will work best for you is to consult with a professional exterior painter who is experienced and up-to-date with developments in the field.

Exterior Home Painting Tips

No two exterior painting jobs are the same! A professional painting contractor knows that there's a lot to consider when painting your home, including the following:

  • Paint Does Not Stop Mold: Contrary to popular myth, exterior paint and stains will not protect your home's wood structures from damage from moisture, mold, or rot in a meaningful way. In fact, in some cases, paint can even trap moisture and promote rot!
  • Cheaper Is Not Better: Consumer Reports (June 2007) states that "economy-grade paint is a bad buy. Premium paints will generally weather better and won't need to be reapplied as often."
  • Stains Will Fail Faster Than Paint: While an opaque stain will be more durable than a semitransparent stain, neither can hold up against wear and tear as well as the best paints.
  • Your Home's Location Matters: If your home is in a shady area, you will need paint that has additional resistance to mold and mildew growth. If it's located in a city or near an industrial area, your paint should be resistant to dirt and staining.
  • Bigger Is More Cost Effective: A gallon of good paint may cost about $32. Buy a five-gallon container of the same paint, and you may only spend $11 per gallon.
  • It'll Look Lighter Than You Think: Natural light tends to soften color (the opposite tends to happen indoors, where colors intensify on the walls). What you see on that paint tile will be darker than what actually appears on your home's exterior

How Many Coats Do You Need?

In A Word: Two.

The Why: With a single coating of paint, the original color can show underneath. The second coat of paint ensures a great color and can help you cover up imperfections and spots that were missed on the first pass.

Additionally, Building Magazine reports that the second layer of paint can extend the life of a paint job by a factor of three.

Where Makes Exterior Paint Great?

Durability isn't everything! Exterior paint can have a high level of protective durability while still offering little decorative appeal over time.

There are five traits that make the best exterior paint:

  1. Long-Lasting Appearance: Your paint should be able to maintain its color and gloss for years to come.
  2. Strong Adherence Properties: Your paint will need to be able to adhere strongly to the surfaces where it's applied, particularly if that surface is old, weathered paint.
  3. Chalking Resistance: Your paint should be able to resist chalking for the life of the paint.
  4. Flexibility: It should be able to flex and compress with your building materials as they change shape and size with temperature and moisture levels.
  5. Stain & Fungal Resistance: Your paint should not attract dirt, nor should it be excessively susceptible to mold, algae, or mildew growth.

"Green" Exterior Paint Choices

Most of the highest-rated paints for both the interior and exterior of your home have a high level of VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) in their design. While these toxic chemicals are unlikely to cause health issues when on the outside of your home, these emissions can contribute to environmental damage.

One compromise to consider is to use recycled paint on your home. The performance is comparable to other paints, but you can rest a little easier knowing that you're helping to do your part for the earth.
